Hello

When a Passion Becomes a
Mission
Preface to Klassikom Music Info Service
It all started 5 years
ago. As an ambitious freshman at university and a long time classical
music devotee, I completed my first serious translation from English to
Chinese in the music arena: Boulez on Boulez originally carried more
than 50years ago on the renowned English journal Music and Musicians.
The translation, in turn, was appreciated by the editors of Music Lover
magazine in Shanghai and finally appeared on the February 2001
compilation, immediately after the Chinese New Year. (check the
Timeline for full list)
A gap of 50 years was
bridged mysteriously and a passion for music and opera was highlighted
by my series of translations published consecutively on Music Lover
till now and still will be. A doorway leading to musicianship was
opened suddenly. The past years since then witnessed my articles on
several other leading serious publications such like
Philharmonic of Beijing, Vanke Weekly of Shenzhen, Andante.com and also
popular medium like New People Evenings in Shanghai. A co-translated
book also published in 2004 under the title Classical Music by John
Stanley.
As the internet emerges
to be the main force of mass medium, I masterminded my first website in
its prototype hooked with a free web space provider in January 2000,
named Klassikom Music Info Service (KMIS), devoted entirely to
immediate global classical news release in Chinese, full coverage
report of news backgrounds and my previous contributions.
Although being forced constantly to be transferred to other free
provider due to hostile takeover with all the interruptions, it becomes
one of the leading Chinese music release sites in two years and
attracted cognoscenti and aficionados alike.
In April 2002, frustrated
by frequent relocation, I merged my site with Salon, originally an
online forum, later developed to what is now Classical Music Salon (www.gdyinyue.com).
That month saw the boost of the site since I was invited to the First
Contemporary Music Forum in China sponsored by the formerly Shanghai
Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra (now Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra).
Yet due to negligence in management and lack of guideline, growing
disappointment and irritation compelled me to seriously think over
establishing a site of which I am in total control.
After several promising
but dreary attempts around the business world, I decided to quit my
former employment as chief representative in a USA company and embark
on my dream world. With the launch of Klassikom after all those
painstaking days and nights, a naïve and seemingly blind passion for
music ripens into a longstanding mission in its initial phase. A dream comes true ultimately: that to promote CLASSICAL MUSIC
in a way it used to and make people (so far for those who read Chinese)
believe it is still ALIVE.
